Comics In the Library
Parents, you might want to check out this article from The Atlantic, by teacher David Cutler:
www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2014/09/how-comic-books-are-creating-super-classrooms/380236/
"The New Teachers' Aides: Superman and Iron Man."
Mr. Cutler discusses the new book, Reading With Pictures: Comics That Make Kids Smarter. Mrs. Kan is on the Board of Directors for Reading With Pictures, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children learn by using comics. She has already used some of the stories with students in grades 3-8 last Spring. She will be adding copies of the book to the library's collection.
Mrs. Kan also edited a book, Graphic Novels and Comic Books, which includes articles discussing the value of using graphic novels and comics in the classroom. This book is available in the school library.
The graphic novels in the school library are all titles from Mrs. Kan's Kid Safe graphic novel lists that she compiles for Brodart Books & Library Services. The books are in three separate grade level areas in the library, so your students are borrowing age-appropriate titles. Some of these books are award winners and appear on recommended lists from the American Library Association, the American Association of School Librarians, and the Young Adult Library Services Association, as well as receiving nominations and awards from the Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards.
